A study reported that mosquitoes can learn to associate the smell of DEET, a widely used insect repellent, with feeding. Researchers say the experiments are conducted under “very specific conditions” in the laboratory and do not undermine DEET’s effectiveness as a repellent in real-world use. In the experiments, Aedes aegypti mosquitoes first avoid DEET when it is presented alone, but the response changes after conditioning. Scientists exposed mosquitoes to warm sheep’s blood while releasing DEET shortly before or during feeding, repeating the pairing multiple times. Afterward, when DEET scent is presented without blood, more than 60% of the mosquitoes attempt to bite a surface associated with the repellent. In a further test, mosquitoes show a preference for a hand coated with DEET over an uncoated hand. The study also reports similar learning with sugar feeding. Researchers involved say the findings suggest mosquitoes’ responses depend not only on DEET’s chemistry but also on how they interpret chemical cues through experience. The work is published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, and lead researchers advise following product instructions because DEET comes in different concentrations.
