Apple is reportedly preparing to let users select third-party artificial intelligence models to power parts of its “Apple Intelligence” features across iOS, iPadOS and macOS. Bloomberg reports the change would span system features such as text generation and editing and image-related functions. The update is expected to arrive with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 later this year.
According to Bloomberg, users will be able to choose among AI model providers that opt in by integrating through their App Store apps. Apple is described as testing some integrations internally, including with Google and Anthropic. Inside Apple’s software, the capability is referred to as “Extensions,” which would allow users to configure which AI services power Apple Intelligence features through the Settings app.
Multiple outlets based on the same reporting describe this as an expansion of Apple’s current approach, under which Apple Intelligence offers ChatGPT as the primary third-party option for functions such as Siri, writing tools and image generation. The reported move also fits a broader strategy to position Apple devices as a more comprehensive AI platform by enabling access to multiple external AI services rather than relying solely on Apple’s in-house models.
