A report says Apple is planning to let iPhone, iPad, and Mac users select third-party AI providers for parts of Apple Intelligence in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. According to Bloomberg, Apple will use a Gemini-based model for Apple Intelligence and Siri features, but users would also be able to choose alternatives such as Google Gemini and Anthropic Claude instead of relying on a single built-in or default option. The change is tied to an “Extensions” capability that allows Apple Intelligence features—such as Writing Tools, Image Playground, and Siri—to pull generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand. Earlier versions reportedly made ChatGPT available as an option in place of Apple’s own AI for certain functions, including Siri-related features, writing, and image generation. In iOS 27, the sources say additional third-party chatbots could be supported if they integrate via the new Extensions system. The reports also indicate Apple plans to differentiate outputs by letting users select different voices for Siri depending on which provider is generating the response, helping users tell whether Siri or an external AI model is responding.
