Rockstar Games employees have publicly launched a union, called the Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU), as a legal dispute between the company and the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) continues. The RGWU is described as a subsidiary of IWGB. The move follows more than 30 Rockstar staff members being fired in October 2023. The employees and unions involved describe the firings as alleged union busting, while Rockstar has said the terminations were linked to alleged leakage of features from upcoming games. After the dismissals, IWGB prepared legal action against Rockstar, including claims that the company refused to negotiate regarding the firings. Those proceedings continue. Protests have been reported around the dismissals and the legal case. The workers’ public announcement frames the union formation as an effort to pursue worker representation and “justice” while the matter is still before the courts. The dispute centers on the circumstances of the layoffs and whether required bargaining and processes were followed, with competing explanations from Rockstar and the union.
