Goa Police dismantle an illegal call centre in South Goa and arrest 26 people over alleged fraud targeting U.S. citizens. Police say the operation is carried out on May 28 following inputs, with a raid conducted at a factory hub in the Verna Industrial Estate area, where the setup is found to be operating. The accused allegedly impersonate officials of U.S.-based banks and contact potential victims through internet-based calling systems.
According to police, victims are persuaded to transfer money under false pretences, in some cases using gift cards. Police add that the accused, who come from multiple Indian states including Nagaland, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, are reportedly residing in rented accommodation in Sancoale, South Goa.
During the raid, authorities seize 145 laptops, 45 mobile phones, and various hardware and accessories including routers and headphones, which police say are used to run the alleged fraud.
