Nigeria’s Lassa fever outbreak continues to worsen, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). In its latest situation report for Epidemiological Week 19, covering 4 to 10 May 2026, the agency reports 793 confirmed cases across 23 states and 108 local government areas, with 204 deaths recorded during the same period. Multiple outlets cite NCDC’s warning that the rising fatality rate is a growing concern. One report adds that the burden of infections is concentrated in several states, noting that Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Edo, and Benue account for 84% of infections. The reports also attribute the worsening situation to factors including delayed hospital visits and poor health-seeking behaviour, along with increased infections among healthcare workers.
