Authorities in Pune suspend 22 police and Maharashtra excise personnel following a suspected hooch tragedy that kills 14 people across Pimpri-Chinchwad and parts of Pune city over two days. Police say the suspensions stem from alleged failures to curb the illegal supply of spurious liquor.
According to an order from the Pune police commissionerate, senior officials including police inspector Sanjay Mogale (Hadapsar police station), assistant police inspector Hasina Sikalgar, and sub-inspector Hasan Mulani are suspended for not preventing the illegal trade and supply in the Hadapsar area. In addition, six officers from Pimpri-Chinchwad police, including a senior inspector, a sub-inspector, and four constables from Dapodi police station, are also suspended.
Eight people are arrested in connection with the deaths, including a key bootlegger. Following the arrests, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) takes over the investigation to examine the illegal liquor supply chain and related enforcement failures. The deaths prompt an internal review of policing and excise oversight in the affected areas.
