The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a ₹7 lakh penalty on Vajiram and Ravi IAS Study Centre LLP for allegedly publishing misleading advertisements about UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) results. The CCPA’s order, issued through a press release by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, follows an investigation into the institute’s marketing claims that highlighted the performance of successful candidates. The institute reportedly advertised figures such as the number of rank holders from Vajiram & Ravi in the top ranks, and claimed that a significant share of selected officers were its students.

The investigation found that several of the candidates showcased in these claims had enrolled only in the institute’s free Interview Guidance Programme (IGP), rather than in full-length coaching courses. The IGP is described as starting after candidates independently clear the UPSC Preliminary and Mains stages. The CCPA said the institute did not disclose the specific courses taken by the successful candidates, which allegedly created the impression that their success was attributable to comprehensive coaching.

The CCPA concluded that the non-disclosure of material information amounted to a misleading advertisement under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and violated consumers’ right to be informed.
