Russia’s state nuclear energy company, Rosatom, says the incident involves a kamikaze-style drone hitting Power Unit No 6, followed by a subsequent detonation, and reports that key nuclear equipment was not damaged. Rosatom’s head Alexei Likhachev characterizes the strike as deliberate and describes a hole in the turbine hall wall.
Ukrainian authorities deny the claim. Multiple outlets report that Kyiv responds by rejecting Russia’s account that Ukraine carried out the drone attack on the plant.
Alongside the dispute over Zaporizhzhia, several sources say Ukrainian drones strike Russian-linked energy and fuel infrastructure in overnight attacks. Russia and Ukrainian officials attribute different targets and outcomes in these broader strikes, but they do not resolve the specific disagreement over whether Zaporizhzhia was hit by a Ukrainian drone.
