Panthalassa, a company developing wave-powered “floating nodes” for AI computing, is preparing an ocean-based pilot following a recent round of funding. Ars Technica and Slashdot report that investors have backed the project with about $200 million in total, including a $140 million investment round announced in a May 4 press release. The money is intended to help Panthalassa complete a pilot manufacturing facility near Portland, Oregon, and accelerate deployments of the ocean system.
The company’s proposed nodes are large steel structures that float in the Pacific and use wave motion to drive water upward through a submerged tube into a pressurized reservoir. The released water then spins a turbine generator that produces renewable electricity for AI chips mounted on board. Panthalassa also says the surrounding ocean water helps cool the chips, potentially reducing the electricity and fresh water traditionally used for cooling in land-based data centers.
A key next step is testing: the latest prototype, called Ocean-3, is scheduled for trials in the northern Pacific later in 2026. Earlier prototypes, including Ocean-1 (tested in 2021) and Ocean-2 (which completed a three-week sea trial off Washington state in February 2024), inform the development path. Panthalassa’s CEO and co-founder has said the company aims to deploy thousands of nodes in the future.
