Spain’s Lamine Yamal, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, says he was afraid he could miss the World Cup. Multiple outlets report the injury began in late April, when the 18-year-old scored a penalty for Barcelona against Celta Vigo on April 22. After suffering the hamstring problem, Yamal missed the final weeks of Barcelona’s domestic season and was kept out for about six weeks, according to some reports. Spain’s coach Luis de la Fuente has indicated Yamal is in “ideal condition” to play in Spain’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde on June 15. However, outlets also note Yamal is not expected to start immediately and will be managed as he returns to full training. He is staying with Spain at the national team base camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee, while he continues rehabilitation. The reports add that Yamal will miss Spain’s warm-up match against Iraq. Alongside Yamal, Nico Williams and Víctor Muñoz are also reported as unavailable for at least the pre-tournament fixture, as Spain prepares for its World Cup opener in Atlanta.
