Ahead of VE Day commemorations on Friday, a survey commissioned by the Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE) finds a significant knowledge gap about the meaning of the holiday. Across the UK, 63% of adults recognise VE Day as marking the end of the Second World War in Europe. Among Gen Z, awareness is much lower, at 34%, meaning two in three Gen Z adults do not know what VE Day marks. The RBVE describes the results as evidence of “a gap in public understanding of military service past and present.” The outlets report that the survey is being used as part of wider efforts to improve public understanding, including initiatives involving commemorative materials intended to help younger people connect veterans’ experiences to the historical significance of VE Day.
