The Supreme Court says it will not allow senior advocates to argue, or even mention matters for urgent listing, during “partial court working days” from Monday until July 12. The court frames the measure as an effort to encourage young lawyers to argue their cases during the summer vacation period, which has been rechristened as partial court working days. During this time, three to four benches are expected to function each week.

Reporting from inside the court, Justice Vikram Nath, heading a bench that includes Justice P B Varale, indicates that senior advocates will not be permitted to argue before his court during the partial working days. When a senior advocate attempted to raise a matter, the bench said it would not allow senior lawyers to either mention the matter or argue in cases listed before that bench during the period. The court says only young lawyers and advocates-on-record (AoRs) will be allowed to argue before the bench during these scheduled days.
