India’s Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to expand the use of satellite technology and space-based applications for managing the country’s water resources. The agreement is signed during a national workshop on research and development (R&D) in the water sector organised by the ministry at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. Under the MoU, the department of water resources and ISRO plan to jointly work across 24 research areas. These include monitoring reservoirs, assessing water spread, analysing river flows, satellite-based water quality evaluation, and studies on macroplastic distribution in water bodies. The MoU is intended to strengthen research and applications related to water security and support technology-led approaches alongside other knowledge systems. At the event, Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil links water security to broader development goals and says water-related challenges require solutions using technology and innovation, as well as traditional knowledge and public participation.
