Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds wide-ranging talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in India, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation across trade, connectivity, border security and defence cooperation, according to both reports. Myanmar’s president is on a five-day visit to India. The trip takes place less than two months after he became president following Myanmar’s parliamentary elections held in December and January, after years of protests following the military junta’s seizure of power in a February 1, 2021 coup that overthrew the democratically elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
Both outlets also link the discussions to India’s strategic relationship with Myanmar. They note Myanmar shares a long border with India, including with several northeastern states, and that border security concerns and defence cooperation are key themes in the talks. The external affairs ministry spokesperson also reports that Modi greets President U Min Aung Hlaing upon his arrival at Hyderabad House for the bilateral discussions.
