India is considering revising tariff concessions for Scotch whisky and other items in the India-UK trade framework in response to the UK’s actions on steel import quotas and shipping restrictions. Multiple reports say New Delhi may rebalance or reconsider commitments it previously made, tying any changes on duties for Scotch to progress on issues India has raised about steel-related measures imposed by the UK.
The Business Standard account links the review to Britain cutting tariff-free steel import quotas and adding new restrictions affecting steel shipments. India Today similarly frames the possible reassessment of Scotch whisky tariff cuts as conditional on whether the UK imposes or eases steel curbs. Times of India adds that the review is part of the effort to resolve a “deadlock” over these trade concerns.
According to Times of India, UK Trade Secretary Peter Kyle is expected to meet India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss the steel quota and duty concerns and seek a resolution, which could determine whether India proceeds with, modifies, or reverses its tariff concessions for Scotch and other goods.
