New research examining Indigenous students’ perspectives focuses on what influences their decisions about whether university is for them. The study centres on students’ own questions and aspirations, including “What do you want to be?”, and investigates which factors help shape students’ perceptions of higher education. The research is framed in the context of national priorities aimed at increasing Indigenous participation and graduation rates across Australia’s tertiary system.
According to reporting, universities and governments treat growing the number of Indigenous graduates as a major priority. Against that backdrop, the study looks for “the spark” that can support Indigenous students in considering university—highlighting the importance of student views in understanding barriers and motivations.
