More than 550 Indian personnel serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) receive the UN Medal of Honour in recognition of their service in the conflict-affected country. UNMISS says the ceremony is held in Malakal, where 565 Indian “Blue Helmets”—including 53 women—are awarded the medal. Blue Helmets covers military personnel, police officers and civilian experts operating under UN peacekeeping command.
UNMISS also reports that 464 Rwandan peacekeepers receive the same UN Medal of Honour at the event. The mission says the award recognizes work that includes protecting civilians through patrols and community engagement, running veterinary camps, supporting women’s self-defence training, combating gender-based violence, and improving humanitarian access.
The UNMISS force commander, Major-General Junhui Wu, says each medal recognizes the commitment and courage of the personnel being honoured. The reports present the awards as part of UNMISS efforts to acknowledge contributions to civilian protection and peacebuilding across South Sudan.
