Dozens of mathematicians endorse the “Leiden Declaration,” which urges the discipline to “not believe the hype” about AI systems’ claimed mathematical capabilities. Backed by more than 150 professors worldwide and endorsed by the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the declaration says governments should be cautious as AI firms increasingly publicize results and performance in ways that may overstate what models can reliably do. It argues that commercial incentives can lead companies to highlight narrow benchmarks while failing to reflect general reasoning ability, and that AI publicity often arrives on market timelines rather than at the pace of human-reviewed science.

The declaration warns that AI can generate plausible but incorrect or unreliable proofs that are difficult for experts to distinguish from valid results, potentially stressing standards for correctness, transparency, and independent verification. It also raises concerns about attribution, saying models trained on published work may not properly cite sources and may rely on data obtained through licensing disputes or copyright violations.

Beyond research practice, signatories argue that AI-assisted work could disrupt incentives for hiring, funding, and recognition, concentrate influence in technology companies, and affect early-career researchers. They also urge evaluation of ethical consequences and call for regulation of the AI industry, protection of authors’ rights, and investment in public computational infrastructure.
