The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rejects recent claims that it sold gold worth about USD 12 billion. In a clarification, the RBI says the reports are “not correct” and that its physical gold holdings have not changed. According to the RBI, its gold reserves remain steady at 880.52 tonnes.

The clarification follows media and public speculation that the RBI may have liquidated gold to protect India’s foreign-currency reserves amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The outlets cited the RBI statement as well as fact-check efforts. Mint and other reports note that the Press Information Bureau also publishes a fact-check on the claims.

In related information shared by official sources, the RBI/PIB also provides context on the share of gold within India’s foreign exchange reserves. The reported gold share is said to rise over time, from 13.92% at the end of September 2025 to 16.70% on March 31, 2026, and to 16.85% as of May 22, 2026.

Across sources, the key point is that the RBI denies any gold sale and states that physical stock remains unchanged.
