FIFA is changing its water bottle rules for the 2026 World Cup in response to widespread criticism of an earlier plan to restrict bottles in stadiums. After announcing that reusable or refillable bottles would not be allowed, FIFA faced backlash from fans and criticism from health and safety perspectives, including concerns about the effects of hot conditions in several host cities across the United States, Canada, and surrounding areas.

According to multiple outlets, FIFA now permits spectators to bring one “soft,” sealed disposable water bottle into World Cup venues. The revised approach keeps the broader restriction on refillable bottles in place, while allowing fans limited access to bottled water that is sealed on entry. Other reporting also notes that FIFA previously said water would be available for purchase at venues.

The change follows disputes over safety and crowd management, with FIFA stating the initial restrictions were intended to prevent risk and injury, but then partially backtracking after objections and media attention. The tournament is scheduled across 16 stadiums in North America.
