Lebanese President Joseph Aoun says a U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel agreed on Wednesday could take effect within 24 hours, once all concerned parties approve it. Aoun made the remarks to local media on Thursday, describing the expected timeline for implementation after the approvals are completed. The ceasefire follows talks held between Lebanon and Israel in Washington and was announced the previous evening.
Both outlets report that Hezbollah has not yet publicly commented on the ceasefire. Hezbollah is described as opposed to the direct talks that led to the announcement and has continued firing at Israeli troops in Lebanon. At the same time, Israel has continued carrying out strikes, including overnight airstrikes reported in and around Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, despite the ceasefire announcement.
The reporting reflects uncertainty over how quickly the ceasefire will be accepted and whether armed groups on the Lebanese side will comply immediately. Israel and Lebanon are still acting in parallel with the announced ceasefire timeline.
