The British Heart Foundation (BHF) says it will close around 150 of its charity shops and cut jobs over the next two financial years. The charity attributes the closures to rising costs and changes in shopping habits, including increased use of online options, which it says leave roughly a quarter of its high street stores commercially unsustainable. BHF has conducted a review of its retail operation, which employs nearly 3,700 staff and operates 640 shops across the UK. The charity reported that net profit across its stores fell from £18.8 million in 2024 to £3.6 million in the year to 31 March 2025, alongside the wider pressures on shop trading. BHF says the move is intended to keep its retail arm financially sustainable and to protect funding for its cardiovascular research work. The closures are expected to occur gradually, as BHF implements the plan during the two-year period.
