Waymo says it will repurpose spent batteries from its electric robotaxi fleet to support stationary energy storage projects in California and Texas. Multiple outlets report that Waymo has signed an agreement with B2U Storage Solutions to supply B2U with retired battery packs for use in power-grid applications, giving the batteries a “second life” after they are no longer suitable for vehicle service.
Sources describe the arrangement as a strategic supply agreement in which Waymo identifies batteries for retirement or “refreshing” based on fleet maintenance and efficiency needs, then repurposes those units when significant capacity remains. Waymo and B2U are described as having discretion over timing and quantities delivered, while B2U has already begun receiving initial batches of batteries.
Because robotaxis operate more intensively than typical consumer EVs, Waymo’s batteries may experience different degradation patterns, but the company says many packs retain substantial usable capacity for stationary storage. Reported expectations include an expansion of storage capacity over time as the robotaxi fleet grows and as additional batteries are diverted from vehicle use, potentially contributing significant megawatt-hours of grid support.
