Algeria says it has started construction on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a project intended to transport natural gas from Nigeria and the wider region toward European customers. The work, described as a major effort across the Sahara, follows a proposal dating back decades.
Multiple outlets report that Algerian state-owned energy company Sonatrach is involved in building part of the pipeline. Al-Monitor adds that Sonatrach is set to construct a segment and connect it to an existing pipeline network in the southwestern Aoulef region, which already supplies gas to Europe. Bloomberg similarly frames the project as a cross-Sahara gas route aimed at expanding supply to European markets.
