South Korean President Lee Jae Myung nominates Han Seong-sook, the current minister of small and medium-sized enterprises and startups, to serve as prime minister. Han is a former CEO of Naver and is presented by the administration as a veteran from the technology sector who can help advance Korea’s innovation-led growth agenda and accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across the economy. Multiple outlets describe her background in internet services, including leadership roles at Empas and later at NHN and Naver, where she became Naver’s first female CEO in 2017.

If confirmed, Han would succeed Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, following her current one-year tenure as SMEs minister. The nomination also sets up an early test for the Lee administration: Han is expected to face a two-day confirmation hearing at the National Assembly next week, with sessions scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Opposition parties indicate they will probe her personal assets, real estate holdings, and her corporate career, while questions in the hearing are also expected to focus on broader appointment and governance priorities tied to Lee’s second-year agenda.
