The club presents the policy as a political stance. Its owner says the charge is “very much a response” to what he describes as attacks and insults against Mexico associated with U.S. President Donald Trump. The outlets also report that the club frames the decision as retaliation for Trump-era rhetoric, rather than as a regular pricing change for all customers.
In addition to the political justification, the club links the move to local pressures in the Roma Norte area. The Independent reports the venue says it is also reacting to what it calls “gentrification and touristification,” terms used to describe growing tourist and expat influence and changing commercial activity in parts of Mexico City.
