A magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Maasim, Sarangani at 7:37 a.m. on June 8 damages school facilities in Mindanao and disrupts classes for millions of learners. The Department of Education (DepEd) reports that the number of affected schools rises over successive assessments, reaching 8,642 schools across 43 divisions in six regions by early June 8–11 reporting, with disruption affecting 4.9 million learners and 156,282 school personnel. Earlier DepEd situation reports estimated about 6,224 schools affected, impacting more than 3.2 million learners and nearly 129,000 education personnel across five regions.
DepEd damage assessments also quantify classroom and facility impacts. One DepEd report records 1,378 public schools with damage to classrooms and water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, along with 8,740 affected classrooms—5,378 minor, 1,774 major, and 1,588 destroyed. Another DepEd update cites 1,159 damaged classrooms (751 minor, 257 major, 151 destroyed) across five regions.
Separately, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) says more than 430,000 people are affected, with tens of thousands of houses damaged. A GMA News report adds that about 3,500 schools remain closed more than a week after the quake.
