The Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) continues to investigate the fatal drownings of Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili. The PNP says CIDG is focused on the case but will not provide further updates for now. Police also report that no significant bruises were seen on the bodies during first aid. Aurora Provincial Police Office chief Col. Percival Pineda previously said there is no evidence of foul play based on statements from companions, describing the incident as a natural accident, and he later added that Baterbonia died of “asphyxia by drowning,” based on a certificate of post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, multiple former and current Ateneo players appear before PNP-CIDG at Camp Crame as part of the inquiry. A lawyer for some former players says the players are “fully cooperating” and that statements are given freely. Police also say only two Ateneo coaching staff members have provided statements so far, while investigators have yet to obtain statements from teammates.

Separately, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) creates a task force to “deeply investigate” all angles, including whether foul play is absent.
