Apple announces new AI-powered editing features for its Photos app as part of Apple Intelligence. The headline feature, Spatial Reframing, lets users virtually reposition the camera after a photo is taken. Users drag to adjust framing and perspective, while the system generates only the missing areas needed to fill gaps created by the viewpoint change, aiming to keep the reframed image consistent with the original scene. Apple says the feature uses “Private Cloud Compute,” processing edits in the cloud while it states that user data is protected.
In addition to Spatial Reframing, Apple updates existing and adds new generative tools. The Cleanup tool receives improvements intended to remove distractions more effectively and produce more realistic content in filled-in areas, including when scenes are complex. A new Extend tool lets users add background space to an image and adjust its aspect ratio.
Sources also note the tools are designed to work not only with Apple devices’ photos but also with older images and pictures taken with non-Apple cameras.
