The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) continues to monitor ongoing aftershocks following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani in southern Mindanao on June 8. Multiple reports cite Phivolcs figures showing the aftershock count rising over consecutive updates: from 989 aftershocks recorded by early Tuesday, to more than 2,000 by Wednesday, and to 3,860 by Friday morning. In later updates, Phivolcs reports 3,019 aftershocks recorded as of 11 a.m. on June 11, with the number fluctuating based on the specific cut-off time and reporting bulletin. The aftershocks range in magnitude from about 1.2–1.3 up to around 6.4–6.7, indicating continued seismic activity near the earthquake’s origin area. Across the reported intervals, Phivolcs also provides that a subset of aftershocks are plotted on maps and that some are felt by residents. Earlier reporting also notes a strong aftershock after the main quake, underscoring that residents in affected areas continue to experience seismic activity.
