Iran’s football federation says FIFA has withdrawn Iran’s allocated tickets for the World Cup group-stage matches days before the tournament begins. In a statement, the Islamic Republic of Iran Football Federation (FFIRI) says ticket sales for the matches had already started but the allocation could no longer be provided to fans after the withdrawal. Several outlets report that supporters who had already made travel and attendance plans are now unable to attend Iran’s games on US soil.

FFIRI also questions the circumstances behind the decision, saying it raises “serious questions” about whether non-sporting or political considerations interfere with the organisation of the event. The federation urges FIFA to follow “neutrality, fairness, and established regulations,” and to ensure that off-field issues do not overshadow the tournament. Outlets note that FIFA’s regulations allocate participating teams a portion of tickets—described as roughly 8% per match—according to each federation’s criteria.

FIFA did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to the reports.
