The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opens an investigation into Paramount Skydance’s proposed $110 billion (£82 billion) takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). The scrutiny focuses on potential competition issues arising from a deal that would combine major UK and international media and sports assets.
Across both companies’ offerings, the transaction would bring together streaming and television platforms and content libraries. The merged group is expected to control Paramount’s and WBD’s streaming services, including Paramount and HBO Max, alongside UK broadcaster Channel 5 and sports channels such as TNT Sports. TNT Sports carries major sports rights, including coverage of the Champions League, Premier League and the Olympics.
In addition, the acquisition would consolidate Hollywood studio operations and intellectual property associated with franchises such as Superman, Batman and Top Gun, and would encompass HBO’s programming, including series such as Game of Thrones, The White Lotus and Succession. The CMA investigation will assess the impact of the merger before any final approval is granted.
