Microsoft’s AI chief Mustafa Suleyman is revisiting comments that suggested artificial intelligence could automate much of the work done by white-collar professionals. In an appearance on The Verge’s “Decoder” podcast, Suleyman says he intended to describe automation of specific tasks rather than replacing full job roles. He clarifies that AI is expected to help workers complete parts of their work—such as drafting or sending emails or supporting conversations—rather than “do the job” of roles like lawyers, accountants, and project managers.
The clarification comes after Suleyman previously warned that most white-collar work could be fully automated within a 12-to-18-month window. According to the reporting, he now emphasizes that those roles will not disappear, but individual duties may be increasingly handled by AI systems. The updates are also described as part of a broader pattern in the tech industry, where other AI leaders have walked back or refined earlier claims about near-term job losses.
