The Department of Justice (DOJ) orders the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the drowning deaths of two Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) men’s basketball players during a team-building activity in Aurora province. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the DOJ says it is assessing whether there is a sufficient basis to recommend filing criminal charges against any parties found liable in connection with the June 8 incident. The DOJ instructs the NBI to form a task force to conduct a thorough, comprehensive, and impartial probe. The task force will determine what occurred during the activity and evaluate the evidence to support any possible criminal charges. The DOJ also frames the investigation as an effort to establish whether criminal liability may attach to individuals responsible for safety and related circumstances surrounding the drowning. The directive follows DOJ actions after the deaths were reported, with the investigation intended to clarify facts and guide any subsequent legal steps based on the findings.
