Chandranath Rath, an aide and personal assistant of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, is shot dead in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas. Police say the attack happens in the Madhyamgram area when Rath is returning home in his SUV/Scorpio and is fired at from close range by unidentified assailants who arrive on a motorcycle. Reports describe multiple shots being fired as Rath sits inside the vehicle.
Following the killing, a police investigation begins and senior officers reach the spot. The motive is not immediately known, and authorities launch efforts to identify and trace those involved. In parallel, CID has arrested three suspects in other states, including an alleged sharpshooter, according to one report.
The Bengal Police recommends the case be handed to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI takes over the probe and forms a team to investigate the murder. The incident comes amid heightened post-election tensions in the state, with political parties trading allegations of violence as investigations proceed.
