Stephen Ogilvie, a 44-year-old man seriously injured in a knife attack in north Belfast, has woken from an induced coma, his family says. In updates posted to a GoFundMe and reported by multiple outlets, relatives say he is continuing his recovery in hospital but faces major challenges ahead. They say he lost sight in his left eye and that doctors are working to preserve vision in his right eye; the family also says the raised funds will help pay for equipment, support and everyday items as he adjusts after the attack.

The attack has also triggered violent disorder across Belfast, including reports of arson and targeted attacks on homes and businesses, along with closures of some schools and businesses. Several sources report that Ogilvie’s family condemns the unrest and urges the community to remain calm and support “peaceful protest,” saying they are “disgusted” by rioting and that they do not want their tragedy to be used to divide people.

Meanwhile, the accused, Hadi Alodid, is remanded in custody. Sources report he is charged with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and threats to kill.
