US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is planning a visit to Bahrain in the coming weeks, according to Arab, Western and US officials familiar with the plan. The trip is expected to be framed as support for Bahrain’s ruling Al Khalifa monarchy and as a signal of Washington’s continued commitment to the Gulf during heightened tensions with Iran. One Arab official, speaking anonymously, says Rubio’s visit would be seen as a vote of confidence from the Trump administration for Bahrain and for the wider Gulf region. A US official, also speaking anonymously, describes the move as demonstrating the Khalifa family’s importance as a US ally facing Iran.

Sources also say the Bahrain trip would be the first by a senior US official to the Gulf since US and Israel carried out attacks on Iran on 28 February. The visit comes as the war disrupts regional security and global energy markets, including through increased tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Bahrain has been among the countries most affected, with attacks reported targeting the US Fifth Fleet’s facilities in Manama and affecting parts of Bahrain’s industrial sector. A ceasefire agreed between the US and Iran in April has generally reduced some pressure, though Bahrain and Kuwait were reportedly targeted again after further US strikes.
