The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) says Nigeria’s ongoing tax reforms must protect taxpayers while also supporting equitable revenue allocation. RMAFC chairman Dr. Mohammed Shehu made the remarks in connection with efforts to reform how taxes are administered and shared across tiers of government. He emphasises that reforms should safeguard the interests of taxpayers as the government changes tax processes and policies. At the same time, Shehu argues that the reforms should strengthen fairness in how revenue is distributed, reflecting the constitutional and fiscal responsibilities of different government levels. The position presented by the commission highlights a dual focus on both taxpayer protection—such as ensuring reforms do not impose unfair burdens—and fiscal balance through more equitable allocation of revenues. The statement aligns RMAFC’s oversight role with broader debates around improving Nigeria’s tax system while maintaining public confidence and promoting effective governance. Overall, the commission calls for reforms that deliver revenue objectives without compromising taxpayer rights or the principles of transparent, just distribution.
