Pope Leo XIV tells worshippers in Barcelona that Christians cannot claim to follow Jesus if they promote war or harm innocents. Speaking in a homily at the Sagrada Familia basilica, he says, “We cannot believe in Jesus and promote war” and “We cannot believe in Jesus and kill the innocent.” The comments, delivered in front of thousands including Spanish King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, are widely described as a response to U.S. policies under President Donald Trump, including the administration’s use of the “just war” concept.

The pope also addresses migration, saying Christians cannot “abandon… those who flee from misery.” He has previously criticized Middle East conflicts and called for a welcoming approach for migrants as well as measures to help integration. He argues that the Church’s role is to preach peace and the Gospel, and he says he has a moral duty to speak out when necessary.

The remarks come amid public exchanges involving U.S. officials and the Vatican, with Trump having criticized the pope’s stance on international affairs. Leo reiterates that he is proclaiming the Gospel rather than endorsing political violence.
