France begins offering one-euro, three-course meals in university canteens to all students, regardless of income, starting Monday. The measure is intended to reduce financial hardship among students and ensure regular access to affordable food. Previously, the discounted €1 rate was limited to students with low incomes or those receiving financial assistance, while the standard price for canteen meals is reported as about €3.30.

The policy follows action by ministers after surveys and student-focused reporting indicated that a large share of university students struggle to afford food. Student unions have also campaigned to widen access to the reduced-price meals for the broader student population. By extending the one-euro option to all students, the government aims to address hunger and cost-of-living pressures more directly within university settings.

The rollout covers university canteens, where meals are served at the new uniform price. The initiative reflects a shift from targeted support to universal access at a reduced rate for students attending higher-education institutions.
