India says three Indian seafarers die after a US strike on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello off Oman. New Delhi’s shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal confirms that three crew members initially reported missing or killed are later confirmed dead after bodies are located and identified. Reports identify the deceased as deck cadet Aditya Sharma, engine fitter Shivanand Chaurasiya, and engineer Patnala Suresh.
According to US Central Command, the strike is carried out as a “precision” operation while the ship transits the Gulf of Oman, with the US stating it believes the tanker is carrying Iranian oil and that the crew does not comply with instructions. Multiple outlets also report that the incident is part of a wider pattern, with the tanker attack described as the second reported US attack on a merchant vessel with a predominantly Indian crew within the same week.
India’s foreign ministry lodges a strong protest with Washington and seeks accountability for the attack. Separately, India’s shipping minister says the US must not carry out violations of what India characterizes as a Hormuz-related blockade.
