Ateneo de Manila University has ordered an independent fact-finding investigation into the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Chukwuemeka Divine Adili, who drowned during an off-campus activity in Aurora province. In a statement, the university’s Board of Trustees said the inquiry is meant to be impartial and thorough, with the goal of establishing a transparent and accurate account of the incident. Ateneo said the investigation will reconstruct a clear timeline of events, review relevant athletic protocols, and interview every individual present during the activity.

The move comes as other entities also pursue their own inquiries into the same drowning incident. According to the reports, multiple government agencies are already tackling separate aspects of the case, while Ateneo’s independent review is set to examine the circumstances surrounding the students’ deaths in line with legal requirements and due process.

Once the fact-finding is completed, Ateneo said it will submit its findings directly to the Board of Trustees for immediate and appropriate action, following the university’s stated obligations and procedures.
