India says the crew of the asphalt tanker Jalveer is being evacuated after a fire and a suspected US military attack off Oman. The vessel, which is Guinea-Bissau-flagged, is reported to be near the port of Shinas. India’s shipping ministry says all 20 Indian crew members are safe. A fire broke out around the ship’s engine room and funnel, and the tanker sent a distress call, according to maritime risk and security firms. Indian officials state the evacuation is coordinated with the Royal Navy of Oman.

Multiple outlets report that the US has disabled the tanker. India’s foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal says the Jalveer was attacked by the US Navy. The Economic Times, citing a statement from US Central Command, reports that US forces fired Hellfire missiles into the engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions. The US says it is enforcing a blockade related to Iranian oil. The reported cause of the fire is not publicly detailed beyond these accounts.

The attack comes after earlier incidents this week involving Indian crews: the Marivex tanker was disabled on Monday, and three Indian sailors died in a strike on the Settebello on Tuesday. US Central Command did not respond to immediate comment requests in one report.
