Jeff Bezos is launching and expanding his AI startup Prometheus, aiming to develop an “artificial general engineer” that helps design and manufacture complex physical products. Multiple outlets describe Prometheus as focused less on language-based systems and more on tools that can work with the physical world, potentially supporting tasks in areas such as robotics, drug design, manufacturing and engineering of items like rocket engines.
Reporting based on earlier coverage from The New York Times and subsequent updates, outlets say Prometheus has secured a $12 billion funding round, valuing the company at about $41 billion. Prometheus is led by Bezos as co–chief executive, alongside Vik Bajaj, who co-founded Alphabet’s Verily. The company is described as having roughly 150 employees.
Bezos also addresses perceived conflicts of interest, with one report stating Prometheus has no corporate ties with Amazon or Blue Origin, despite his background in both. Prometheus is presented as providing engineering capabilities that other companies building sophisticated devices could use, including businesses in aerospace and other heavy-industry sectors.
