Reform UK reinstates Glenn Gibbins, the councillor for Sunderland’s Hylton Castle Ward, after it conducted an internal disciplinary process over deleted social media posts. Gibbins was elected in early May and the controversy stems from comments he allegedly made in March 2024, in which he said he “carnt” believe the number of Nigerians in town and that they “should melt them all down and fill in the pot holes.” The remarks prompted widespread condemnation and an investigation by the party.
According to Reform, Gibbins has now been readmitted to the party and issued with a final written warning. A spokesperson says he has apologised for making the post and accepts that it was created in “extremely poor taste” and showed poor judgment. Gibbins also told local media his posts were “intended as jokes,” while acknowledging they were inappropriate.
Additional reported posts attributed to Gibbins have drawn criticism for other views, including comments about women on television and commentary in sport. Labour’s Anna Turley criticised the decision, calling it unacceptable. Reform says it has internal processes for conduct issues.
