Signal is releasing a beta update that changes how “safety numbers” work. Safety numbers are used to help users verify the privacy of their communications with a contact, either by comparing a number or by scanning a single QR code. Signal says it previously introduced a redesigned safety number experience because the prior user experience no longer met users’ expectations. In November, the app began experimental support for “advisory” safety number changes, intended to collect feedback before making that approach the default. The new beta reflects feedback collected over roughly the past six months. The update incorporates changes based on that input, adjusting the safety number behavior related to advisory changes. The Signal blog presents the update as an evolution of the safety number UX and functionality, building on the earlier redesign and the advisory testing period. The release is positioned as part of Signal’s ongoing development of how safety number verification should work for users and contacts.
