Indian shooting legend and coach Jaspal Rana dies at 49, with multiple outlets reporting he passes away in a Delhi hospital after a brief illness. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) confirms his death, and NDTV reports NRAI president Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo as saying Rana dies on Thursday night. Several accounts link his deterioration to falling ill during the Indian contingent’s return flight from the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany, after which he is admitted and undergoes treatment that includes a medical procedure to fix a stent. Despite medical efforts, he does not recover.

Rana is described across outlets as one of India’s prominent pistol shooters and later as a highly influential coach who helps develop multiple athletes. His coaching is noted as significant for Manu Bhaker, whom he guides to two bronze medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After his death, Bhaker arrives at Rana’s residence and shooting academy in Poundha to pay her last respects and breaks down in tears, with images and videos shared widely online.

NDTV also reports that Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoles Rana’s death.
