China has launched a new research laboratory in Shanghai focused on photonic computing, aiming to support artificial intelligence development while working around constraints tied to US semiconductor export curbs. According to reports, the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Integrated Photonic Computing Chips and Systems opened on Wednesday and is described as China’s first industry–academia platform dedicated to photonic computing. The Next Web and South China Morning Post both cite coverage from Shanghai’s Jiefang Daily about the launch. The laboratory is based in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is presented as a top-level lab for integrated photonic computing chips and systems. The outlets say the initiative reflects a strategic effort to pursue light-based computing approaches that could reduce dependence on conventional chip technologies affected by external restrictions, including limits on performance and power. The reporting also notes that the lab is led by Zou Weiwen, identified as the director of the new facility. The launch signals increased investment in photonics research as China develops alternative hardware pathways for AI.
