The Washington National Opera (WNO) has filed a federal lawsuit against the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts seeking more than $17 million. WNO says the Kennedy Center has refused to return donations and related funds it believes belong to the opera company after the two sides ended their relationship earlier this year.

Sources describe a long-standing contractual arrangement in which the Kennedy Center provided support services for WNO, while WNO staged operas at the venue. WNO alleges that during the Trump administration’s takeover of the Kennedy Center, support services such as marketing, fundraising, and administrative functions were discontinued, and the governance structure later proposed ending the relationship. WNO states it requested return of funds under the terms of the agreement and that the Kennedy Center did not return the money.

The dispute also comes amid broader governance conflicts at the Kennedy Center, including a last-minute legal fight over removing President Trump’s name from the building facade and related efforts to keep the name. The WNO’s lawsuit cites the Kennedy Center’s federal status and, according to reporting, challenges the basis for withholding the funds.
